National Quitters Day

January 19th is the day that a large percentage of people quit their New Year’s Resolutions.  The day that the gyms are empty and bars are full!  And everyone goes back to their “regularly scheduled programming”.

According to research, 23% of people quit their New Year’s Resolution by Jan 19, and 80% quit by the 2nd week of Feb.

If you are part of the 23% or maybe on your way to being part of the 80%, I’ve got something here for you

If you are not changing due to a traumatic event that causes your brains fight, flight, freeze to take over, (and yes, a bad medical report can be this trauma, having to face our limited time on this planet tends to shake people) it typically takes longer for that change to really stay, that habit to form, for the neural pathways of your brain to be remapped.

Is this you?  Personally I think this day being a “thing” is just a reason FOR some people to feel better about “quitting”.  Oh…It’s a celebrated day, and I’m not alone.  The same people who are not Irish and celebrate St Paddy’s day and who drink margarita’s on May 5th, whilst thinking they are celebrating Mexican Independence Day (face palm here)  “well, everyone else it doing it!”  Marketing done well.

Let me lay down these 10 things that come to mind for you…

#1- you can quit today, and start again tomorrow.  Everyday is a new opportunity to make a new choice, to start over, to change.  What I tell my fitness clients, every meal is a new opportunity to walk towards or away from your goals.

#2- “failing is something you do, not something you ARE”

#3- It can take more than 30 days to create a habit, and to see real results.  I can tell you it’s not until at least 60 days in the fitness arena, and maybe longer depending on your age/metabolism.

#4- Do what others do not, so you can do what others can’t.

#5- When you are ready, you will.  Are you Interested, or committed?

#6- If you have quit, can you see what worked to get you started, what didn’t?

#7- Did YOU really want it?  Or was it a pressure-goal?  If it isn’t something you really wanted, then don’t do it, unless it’s a need for health purposes.  Find something YOU really want and do that.

#8- Did you have a WHY?  If so, your “why” was not greater than your “why not”.

#9- Start again.  Everyday if you have to.  Use what worked, and change what didn’t. The first time you stood up and started to walk, did you fall?  Or were you Forrest Gump?  It amazes me that as kids we were so determined to do things, to grow, move, learn and as adults we lose some of this.

#10- Don’t call it a resolution- make a LIFE CHANGE!

Are you picking up what I’m laying down?

Make it stand out
